Lasting Powers of Attorney

Appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can help alleviate that burden finding someone to manage your affairs should you become incapable of making sound judgement.

Important information: Our website offers information about investing and saving, but not personal advice. If you’re not sure which services are right for you, please request advice from Hilltop’s financial advisers. Remember that investments can go up and down in value, so you could get back less than you put in.

If you no longer can make decisions yourself, do you have the support network that can make those decisions for you?

What is a Lasting Powers of Attorney?

A Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) is a document that gives someone or several people you appoint the legal authority to act of your behalf. The named person is called Your Attorney and could be a family member, professional person or a trusted friend.

The LPA gives you more control over what happens to you should you have an accident or illness that reduces your capacity to make sound decisions.

Are there different types of LPA?

Property and Financial Affairs

Property and Financial Affairs

Engaging a Property and Financial Affairs LPA, gives you the peace of mind that your chosen Attorney can make sure your assets are looked after. The Attorney will ensure your bills, including mortgages and outstanding debts, are continued to be paid. They will furthermore look after your investments and invest funds to provide for your ongoing needs.

Your Attorney can potentially look after:

  • Managing a bank or building society account
  • Paying bills
  • Collecting benefits or a pension
  • Selling your home

Health and Welfare LPA

This type of Lasting Power of Attorney provides your Attorney with the power to make crucial decisions regarding your health and welfare. More importantly, they can make decisions regarding your life-sustaining treatment should the worst happen.

Your Attorney could help with the below decisions:

  • Your daily routine, for example, washing, dressing, eating
  • Medical care
  • Moving into a care home
  • Life-sustaining treatment
